Aspirin is rich in salicylic acid which helps reduce flakes and also has antimicrobial properties.Simply crushing two to three aspirins to a fine powder and adding it to the normal amount of shampoo you use each time you wash your hair. Leave the mixture on your hair for 1-2 minutes, then rinse well and wash again with plain shampoo.
This fights off dandruff supposedly due to its mildly abrasive ex-foliating and fungicidal properties.Start by mixing 1 part baking soda with 3 parts water.Apply the baking soda and water mixture to dry or wet hair by starting at the roots and working to the ends. Let it sit for 1 - 3 minutes then rinse with warm water.
After a few weeks your scalp will start producing natural oils, leaving your hair softer and free of flakes.
Lemon has acidic properties which help to fight off dandruff as the scalp naturally is acidic making it difficult for fungus to survive. Just massage 2 tablespoons lemon juice into your scalp and rinse with water. Then stir 1 teaspoon lemon juice into 1 cup water and rinse your hair with it. Repeat this weekly until your dandruff disappears. No more itchy scalp, and your hair will smell lemon-fresh.
The abrasiveness of ordinary table salt works great for scrubbing out dandruff before you shampoo. Grab a saltshaker and shake some salt onto your dry scalp. Then work it through your hair, giving your scalp a massage. You’ll find you’ve worked out the dry, flaky skin and are ready for a shampoo.

6. Eat a healthy, balanced diet.
Here is another reason to eat right, it turns out that a healthy diet may ward off the flakes. Make sure to get plenty of zinc, Omega-3 fatty acids, E and B-vitamins, and avoid excessive yeast and sugar. Research suggests that dandruff is at least in part caused by a fungus that thrives in yeasty, fatty, sugary environments. Though this does not necessarily directly affect the conditions of your skin, your overall health will help with how your body responds to the fungus causing the dandruff.
7.Tea tree oil
This has antiseptic qualities that may help kill the fungus, and keep your scalp moisturized. Just add 5-6 drops to your regular shampoo. Or just purchase a shampoo that contains tea tree oil. I haven't been able to loacte this in Guyana as yet.
8. Rosemary oil and Lemon
Applying a combination of rosemary oil and some lemon juice is a highly beneficial natural cure for Smelly Hair. Follow this home remedy about 2-3 times in a week by applying the mixture overnight and then rinsing the hair with a mild shampoo the next morning. Olive oil, jojoba oil or lavender oil can also be used in the same way.
Not all dandruff shampoos are alike. Some have different active ingredients, such as:
- Coal tar preparations (Denorex Therapeutic Protection, Neutrogena T/Gel, Scytera)
- Pyrithione Zinc (Selsun Blue for Itchy Dry Scalp, Neutrogena T/Gel Daily Control Dandruff Shampoo, Head & Shoulders)
- Salicylic acid and sulfur (Sebex, Sebulex)
- Salicylic acid (Neutrogena T/Sal )
- Selenium sulfide (Dandrex, Head & Shoulders Clinical Strength, Selsun)
- Ketoconazole (Extina, Nizoral A-D, Xolegel,Zinoral)
You may need to switch between types of shampoos if one type controls the dandruff at first but later loses its effectiveness.
These shampoos can be found at pharmacies such as Medicare,Medicine chest.
